or at least summer camp...
i’m sitting on the boyfriend's couch decompressing after a really long day. i need to ice down my shoulder and chest. today i became the queen of dodgeball. the little boys were surprised to have their little butts handed to them by a girl.
the first kid i got out was teased mercilessly; after all, his ball was caught by a girl. score one, anonymous teacher. i proceeded to rack up the kills. i was much better at catching than throwing, but i was told, “wow. this girl’s got a rocket.” i may’ve hit a couple kids in their little heads…oops. i also knocked two kids off their feet. i throw hard, but i have horrible aim.
time to vege out in front of the television for a bit before i head home to bed...

Anonymous, after this year I have a much greater appreciation of the hazards of playing against the opposite sex than I ever had before. In January, our boys hockey team in Warroad, of which I was the co-head coach, played the U.S. Women's Olympic team. As far as I know, it's the only time an official hockey game has been played between males and females in the United States, and the pressure was unbelievable. I had three phone calls for interviews from radio stations across the state before school had even started on the day of the game. The Minneapolis Star/Tribune sent people up (365 miles) to cover the game, many area TV stations were there, and we even made it onto ESPN. The hockey chatlines were buzzing, and the common themes were that we were crazy to agree to play the game, and that our kids would be taunted mercilessly in every arena we played in for the rest of the year if we "lost to girls."
Well, let me tell you that those girls were good! Our kids couldn't believe how strong they were, and their conditioning was outstanding. We came out storming, and took an early lead, but the longer the game went on, the more the ice started to tilt the wrong way. Our team was better conditioned than any high school team we played, but we weren't even close to these women. Final score: Warroad Warriors 3 Team USA Women 2. We scored on the only shot we got in the entire third period. (Lucky!) I've never been so relieved as I was when that final buzzer went off. Going through something like that could take the male chauvinist pig out of anyone!
girls rule!! :)
Glad you had so much fun. Yes, girls rule!
Dennis-
I vividly recall reading about that game, and you're right-the sports news coverage was pretty intense. Congrats on the win. Shortly thereafter, the US Women's Olympic team gave itself a big fat black eye by passing on Cammi Granato when it formed it's roster.
I've dated a few girl hockey players, and a few are just as intense as some of my old teammates (Who gets a black eye during the course of foreplay???)
Good luck next season :)
Sterno: When I look at a profile, and I see that hockey is listed first in the interests section, I know that I've run into a pretty good guy.
Anonymous and DCS: You sexists!
Don't let 'em get to you, AT...the way I learned to catch a baseball was my cousin throwing it AT MY FACE!!! From then on, anytime someone said "You can't do it, you're just a girl" it was ON. Which explains my busted hand during co-rec softball at Tech. CroMagnonCoach told the girls "just let them walk you...the guys'll take care of the score"....which made me want to show him. It also made me think I could catch a low-flying ball with my BARE HAND when I was playing shortstop. The hand may have ended up turning black in a cool triangle pattern...but I sure didn't let CroMagnonCoach know that it hurt!! Who's the man, now, I ask you?!?!? ha!
lol, you're teaching them a life lesson Ms Anon: girls are dangerous! ;)
