practicality...

I have a pile of essays with my name on them. My juniors keep bugging me to get them back. They aren't completely graded, despite the fact that I've had them a week...
I tried to explain to them that they have one to write; I have 25 to grade...didn't make much of an impact on them. I told them I'd give them until Monday to finish their next essay if they give me until Monday to finish grading them...

Anyways, on to my question for blogworld...How long does it usually take you to grade and hand back essays? (They're 2-4 page narratives...25 of them...and I'm a tough grader)

I always tell them two weeks. I tell them upfront that is what will happen - I am not just grading their essay and exams, but also lesson planning, etc.

Sometimes they complain, but I shrug my shoulder's and move on.

Hey AT, I see you're back in business (in more ways than one!). I looked at your previous post, and I understand it taking you so long to post again.

I'm assuming you're an English teacher(?). I am a social studies guy, so that makes a big difference. I do pay attention to kids' grammar and spelling, but I doubt that I'm nearlyh as meticulous about it as you are. I try to get papers back to kids within a couple of days, in part because I know they like quick feedback, and in part because I can't stand having unfinished work sitting on my desk. Believe it or not, I actually feel guilty about getting them back so fast, because I feel like I'm not being as thorough as you probably are.

By the way, you need to change your profile. You are no longer a first year teacher. You are now a seasoned veteran!

I hate to grade. Hate it, hate it, hate it. The writing papers are the worst. I have found, however, that a writing rubric helps me so much to deal with the subjectivity of the process. Still it can take me at least a week to get things back to them. I try to do five or six at time so I don't go stark raving mad.

Rubrics are a teachers best friend. I like rubistar...it keeps your rubrics on file and helps you set them up...and it's free! I like to give students the rubrics when I give the assignments so they know what it will take to get the grade! Good Luck!

No matter how long it takes it always takes too long

from a primary school point of view you have each child to read their work to you (especially in grade prep, 1 and 2). Otherwise it's like working out hieroglyphics. But at least they're not *long* like yours are.

Rubrics are a godsend. I honestly couldn't grade writing assignments if I didn't have one. As it is, as a science teacher, I don't have a lot of papers to grade. My students' work tends to be more along the project/lab report vein and again, without a rubric, it would be a nightmare.
