a creative Halloween costume...

Imagine the copy room...before school...on Halloween...

VCVB: Where's your costume?

Me: I'm going on a field trip this afternoon...didn't think I should go to the library dressed up. What about you?

VCVB: Well, I was going to wear a low-cut shirt and be Miss Anonymous, but...

I just stared at her. Dumbfounded. She did the awkward, joking laugh. I walked away, biting my tounge to keep from saying something really nasty.

Of course I couldn't let it go...the next day I wore a tighter, lower-cut sweater and my knee-high boots. It was a lovely time.

I was on a field trip the afternoon of Halloween and the day after it, so I missed lunch both days. But during lunch when I got back, I sat next to VCVB and made sure to lean over as much as possible...I also said of Romeo and Juliet (which she considers a sacred text...almost the Bible to her), "They're just a couple hormonal teenagers who want to get laid." She didn't appreciate that.
I'm back to conservative today though. I don't know if my freshmen could handle another outfit like yesterdays. It really wasn't that low-cut, but in the freshman world, when a teacher wears anything besides a turtleneck, she's leaving herself open for pervy comments.

Hi there -

Just wanted to let you know I really enjoy reading your posts.

I'm a 36 year old science teacher, and what I'd give to be back in the "able to wear short skirts" days! : )

Thanks for the laugh, and hang in there.

AT, as an older teacher, I just want you to know that I have never objected in any way about any young female teachers wearing low cut outfits, and I never intend to.

Amy, thanks for the support...and we have a teacher at my school who's 38 and still wears mini-skirts. She also likes to sit on desks when teaching...her freshmen are more stunned than mine.
And, Dennis, I'm not going to lie, I break out the lower cut shirts occasionally, but I keep it appropriate. I don't want to kill my freshmen...just shock them a bit. They pay better attention on those days.

AT, I have no doubt that you keep it appropriate. I am definitely not a "style" guru, so whenever I go shopping for clothes, I bring my wife and my daughter-in-law along. They are both very good at that, and I refer to them as my fashion consultants. After all, a man's got to know his limitations. And you know what? I think the kids like that I dress as well as I do. When my wife and daughter-in-law help me pick out clothes, I get compliments. When I used to do it myself, I'd hear nothing.

But due to the fact that my wife is "with it" when it comes to clothes, I know that low neck lines have never been more in style than they are now. All you have to do is take a look to see what the high school girls are wearing to figure that one out. My wife has frequently told me that most male teachers dress like old men, and she doesn't want me to join their ranks. I'm sure that you have no desire to dress like an "old lady." Sure, keep it appropriate, but you're young. Enjoy it and take advantage of that. There's nothing wrong with being fashionable and looking good.

And by the way, I'm sure I'd pay better attention on those days, too!

Dennis, there is nothing wrong with asking for style help. I bring my mother shopping whenever I need new clothes. Like you, I have no sense of fashion. I know what I like, and while that works sometimes, I don't always want to march to my own beat. Oh, the life of the fashion challenged.

Great blog!

Take what conservative bitch says as a compliment ... there is obviously something lacking in her life (or wardrobe) for her to make such an un-called for comment.

My low cut, short skirt days are over, but I say if you can carry it off by all means do it.
